J.R. on the Dr. Oz show
Former Dancing With the Stars winner J.R. Martinez says his mother got him to snap out of his depression after his horrific accident in Iraq.
In 2003, Martinez was suffered severe burns on more than 34 percent of his body when his Humvee hit a landmine. Martinez underwent 33 surgeries and spent 34 months in the burn center unit of the Brooke Army Medical Center. He later became a motivational speaker which lead to a role on All My Children in 2008 and competing on Dancing in 2011.
“After I saw myself for the first time, I literally fell into this dark hole of depression, anger, regret,” he tells Dr. Oz in the exclusive clip below. “After a couple of weeks … I think [my mother] got fed up with it and tired of seeing me go through that … and she literally came into my room one day and said my first middle and last name in Spanish. My mother was clear and she said, ‘I don’t know why this happened to you, but I’m telling you that you have to believe and you have to have faith and over time will be able to see the big picture.’”
